“Turn. Turn. I want to see your backside, Lucas,” Lizzy said with mock severity.

“My backside?” Lucas laughed.

“Yes, how an outfit looks in the back is extremely important, especially with pants,” she informed him rather archly.

“Says the girl who dresses like she keeps her eyes closed when she picks from her closet,” he teased.

Lizzy was in a pair of ratty jeans, a stained, dark red, long-sleeved t-shirt covered by a gray hoodie. She also had on two different colored socks, one blue, the other pink. She shrugged.

“I’m not interested in fashion for myself. Child’s clothes bore me. But nicely tailored men’s clothes are beautiful,” she said.

Lucas lifted his eyebrows. “You always surprise me, Lizzy. You’re not like any kid I’ve ever met.”

She shifted a little and gave him a smile that didn’t meet her eyes. Why did it bother her that she wasn’t like other kids? Usually, statements like that made kids happy, because being more mature was the goal. Yet, he could see that Lizzy felt set apart by her greater maturity and high intelligence. He touched her knee.

“I’m sorry, Lizzy. I think you are great. That’s what I meant,” he said.

She looked up at him almost shyly. “Thank you. I think you’re great too.”

He grinned at her. “Let me do a twirl for you now.”

Lucas obligingly turned in the pair of exquisitely tailored black pants that felt like they had been made for him. The soft cashmere sweater in charcoal skimmed his sides. He was modeling for her in the walk-in closet. Lizzy was seated on the teak bench that ran along the center. He was standing in front of the tri-fold mirror that was taller than he was and gave him a full view of his body. He looked so different in these fine, elegant clothes. Truthfully, he hardly recognized himself.

“You’ve made me look like some kind of rich playboy.” Lucas grinned at her in the mirror.

“I’ve made you look like a very stylish young man with money to burn. It’s a very attractive look,” she said. She pointed to a ribbed shirt and puffer vest. “Try that on.”

“You got me so much stuff. I think I could wear a new outfit every day for like a month and never repeat,” he said as he fingered the white ribbed shirt.

“There were so many things that reminded me of you that I couldn’t help myself.” She shrugged again, but her cheeks colored slightly.

“Konstantin isn’t going to be mad about you using his credit card and going nuts, is he?”

She had already explained that she’d ordered from the local shops with which the club had a relationship already. That’s how the clothes had been delivered in less than twelve hours. Lucas had gone around to every clothing store on the main street and surrounding streets looking for a job. They were all high end boutiques where a plain white t-shirt cost $150 so he feared what the perfectly faded jeans or the cashmere sweater he took off and carefully folded cost.
